The different laws surrounding seatbelts on school buses vary by state and can be summed up into two main categories: states where seat belts are required by law and states where they are not. To date, only six states require seat belts. They are:

Those are the states in which school buses must have seatbelts. However, they do have exceptions to the rules. One of these is that older school buses may not be required to have seatbelts. And the answer is to keep an eye on the rules. While the laws surrounding seatbelts may not change, other maintenance on buses must be kept up to date through routine maintenance to ensure that all parts and equipment are running in smooth order.
