Welcome to UpKeep — Max Gong
Welcoming Max Gong to the UpKeep Family!
We’re so excited to welcome Max to the team this week! Max is joining us as our Project Coordinator within Strategic Initiatives, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have him on board! Here is our interview with him!
We’re excited to welcome you to the UpKeep family today, Max! Tell us a little about yourself!
Hi! I’m Max Gong. I was born and raised in the SF area of California. I graduated UCLA with a B.S. in electrical engineering, and I’m currently finishing up my master’s in electrical engineering at UCLA. One thing I’m really passionate about is social impact. One of my proudest projects related to social impact was being a part of Engineers Without Borders and designing as well as installing solar-powered running water systems for homes in the Navajo Reservation.
How did you first get into Operations?
To be honest, I started my career thinking I would only focus on electrical engineering. For 4 years, I took on internships as an electrical engineer in aerospace companies, semiconductor companies, and medical device labs. But recently, I re-evaluated my passions and my long-term career goals, and I asked myself, “What skills do I really need to develop in order to make the most social impact?” In that process, I learned that I really want to gain business and operations experience and expand my view of the business world. So here I am today, excited to work in Strategic Initiatives at UpKeep as a Project Coordinator!
Why are you excited to join UpKeep?
So many reasons! I’ll list two of them. For one, I resonate with UpKeep’s mission to bring advanced tech to improve the lives of those in the maintenance and reliability workforce. I’m super eager to contribute to that mission. For two, I resonate with UpKeep’s work culture and values. It’s a community where I feel welcomed and inspired every day.
What are your first thoughts about the culture and team so far?
The first thing I noticed is how much effort and thought the UpKeep team places on making sure we don’t feel lost in the onboarding process. I think this really shows how much UpKeep cares about its employees.
Max, you mentioned how you turned your bedroom into a light show. That’s so awesome! What made you want to build this and what are some other passion projects you’ve been thinking of starting?
Thanks! I’ve always wanted to make my room look sick. And so I did. For my next project, which is actually also a class project, I’m working on creating an indoor positioning service using phones & bluetooth beacons. I think it’s cool to work on something that has the potential to improve the shopping experience or improve warehouse productivity.
Finally, and most importantly, what would you be if you were a kitchen utensil?
I would be a spork. More specifically, the plastic white spork you would find at an elementary school cafeteria in America. I just think it’s really funny, yet versatile.
