Welcoming Maura Melis to the UpKeep Family!

We’re so excited to welcome Maura to the team this week! Maura is joining us as our Growth Marketing Manager, and we are thrilled to have her on board! Here is our interview with her!

We’re excited to welcome you to the UpKeep family today, Maura! Tell us a little about yourself!

Hello! My name is Maura Melis. I was born on the Dutch Island of Curacao in the Caribbean, moved to the Netherlands, and then to South Florida at age 8. I attended and graduated from the University of Texas (UT) at Austin (Hook Em!) with a Bachelor’s of Business Administration (concentration in Marketing) and a minor in Advertising. I recently moved from Austin, Texas to the Bay Area. In my spare time, I love to travel, cook, and spend time outside. After living in Austin, I am loving the cooler Bay Area weather!

How did you first get into Marketing?

I first got into Marketing when I majored in it at UT. My first internship was with World Peas, now known as Peatos, a chickpea-based snack brand in 2015. I was responsible for our social media presence and created our brand ambassador and giveaway programs! I did not have a car at the time so I spent almost all of the money I earned on rides to and from the office. It was worth the great experience though. I learned how important it is for a brand to build trust and a genuine connection with its audience.

Why are you excited to join UpKeep?

I’m inspired by our mission to help represent the underserved maintenance community through the value of our platform. I’m excited to be a part of accelerating our growth so that we can provide value to as many maintenance professionals as possible.

What are your first thoughts about the culture and team so far?

I’m so impressed by the level of engagement and communication between the team. This is my first time remotely onboarding so I was a bit nervous as to how it would go. Would I feel a strong sense of culture despite working remotely out of the Bay Area? Well, I can tell you that the answer is YES! The entire team has been so welcoming since day one.

We have to know – which FIFA and UEFA tournaments have you attended in the past? Any fun stories? As a fan of The Netherlands’ team, which event was your favorite?

I attended the FIFA World Cup in 2014, the UEFA Euro Cup in 2016, and was meant to attend the 2020 Euro Cup in London this past summer. Unfortunately, the tournament was postponed due to COVID-19, so I am crossing all my fingers that there will be an in-person tournament next summer! The 2014 World Cup was a spectacular tournament for Oranje, we ended up finishing in 3rd place. After a devastating loss in the 2010 final against Spain (on my birthday no less), Oranje came out of the gate in the group stages with a game against Spain and won 5-1. One of those five goals is probably my favorite goal of all time. Van Persie got the nickname “The Flying Dutchman” afterward. Give it a Google, you’ll see why!

Finally, and most importantly, what would you be if you were a kitchen utensil?

I would be a pair of tongs because they are versatile and could adapt to serve several other purposes. In a pinch (get it, pinch… cause tongs…) they could be used as a fork, spoon, knife, spatula, whisk, you name it! With a creative angle and different perspective, tongs can be used for almost anything. I take a similar approach in life in that I try to make the best of any situation!
